BE
A BUILDER
The
focus for this half term will be 'building' - rhymes, story structure,
materials and animations. Each week we will be working in groups to do a
cooking activity. The food
will then be shared so that each child will have a sample. We are also
planning some 'themed' days where the children will work in groups on a
range of 7 or 8 related activities.
Please
see attached sheet for the weekly overview.
Please
save EXTRA LARGE cardboard
boxes for us to make into vehicles.
We
will be sending out guidelines for the homework challenge at the beginning
of Week 3

LONG
AGO
Our
topic this half term has a historical basis.
We will be visiting
Milton Keynes
Museum
in Wolverton on Wednesday 3 March to look at household artefacts, mainly
from the Victorian era. We
would recommend you to visit the Museum with your children as there is so
much to see. (Tel: 316222 for
opening hours). It is open on
a more regular basis from Easter onwards. We have planned to set up our
own `Museum' in the Shared Area. We
would like the children to dress up in Victorian costume on several
occasions and will send you a separate letter giving guidelines.
In
Literacy we will be working on Recounts, using dictionaries, writing
instructions and using non-fiction books.
We will read a range of stories from fantasy worlds.
Book Week is from Monday 1st until Friday 5th
March. Our focus will be
stories from long ago. Please continue to support your child with reading
at home, key words/spellings.
Our
Maths work will include money, tens and units, measures, time and data
handling. We will send you
details of our half termly Maths homework about Money shortly.
In
Science we will be sorting and making comparisons of a variety of
materials. We will be talking
about why certain materials are used to make various objects.
Our
Y1 Assembly for Parents is on Thursday 18th March at 9.00 am.
We hope you can come!
Please
remember to work with your child to produce a hat for the Easter Hat
Parade which should be brought to school on Thursday 1st April.

PEOPLE AND PLACES
This
term in Literacy some emphasis will be placed on reading comprehension and
making appropriate responses to multiple choice questions.
We shall use research skills to find out about famous people, such
as Florence Nightingale and Grace Darling.
Writing
skills will be enhanced by focusing on sentence structure, writing poems
and non-fiction writing particularly non-chronological report writing.
Mathematically,
we shall be reinforcing and developing strategies for addition and
subtraction. The children will be learning to estimate and round numbers
up or down, and to begin to understand multiplication and division.
Mental calculation, problem solving strategies and reasoning about
numbers will play an important part when considering numerical decisions
and in checking results.
Personal
hygiene and exercise will be discussed as part of the Science curriculum
and we will be thinking about healthy living in PSHE.
In
Geography and ICT we will be looking at simple maps and routes.
