Back       Your Child has Moved into Key Stage One

Year One Curriculum

A week in Year One

Getting to know you

You will notice some changes to the school routines now that your child is in Year 1.

Your child has entered the phase in their education called Key Stage One and this will last for two years. They are now following the National Curriculum which consists of the core subjects English, Mathematics, Science, Information and Communication Technology, RE and the foundation subjects of History, Geography, PE, Art Design & Technology, PSHE (personal, social, health and citizenship education) and Music.

These will be taught in a topic-based approach. The Curriculum Newsletter is sent home at the beginning of each half term to tell you about the next topic

•  Children will have daily Numeracy and Literacy
•  Our Library days will be Wednesdays and Thursdays

•  Our PE days will be Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays

•  We will have choosing time on Friday afternoons. Children will be able to take part in a range of activities to reward the hard work for the week

•  Children will have their fruit daily at 10.35 am

•  Children will have play time from 10.40 am until 10.55 am

•  Children will be involved in Birthday and Praise Assemblies
•  A happy balance of directed and free choice activities will continue. For example: sand and water in the Shared Area

The children will be agreeing rules and expectations in the early part of the year and all children will then be expected to adhere to them. This will enable us to get to know each other as we begin our time in Year 1 so that we can achieve as a team and as individuals.

During the Autumn Term it is also important that we learn about our new area. The children need to have ownership of their classroom and their year group area. This means learning about the staff's expectations and for children to take responsibility for those areas. We will all be working together to make this a happy, safe and attractive place to work
