A day in Early Years at Ashbrook School

The teachers are always waiting at the door to welcome parents and children into school.

Coats, P.E. bags and lunch boxes are stored in the cloakroom.

At the beginning of the day, reading books are changed and Jolly Phonics books collected in.

Children choose which table top or carpet activities they would like to do, either on their own or with friends.

Later, when we have tidied up, we get into our ‘Tiger circle’ and say our Welcome Rap. The Special Person for that day starts us off.

We light our ‘thinking candle’ and talk about what is going to happen that morning.

Sometimes we all work together with the teacher, sometimes we go off in groups to do other tasks. We have two very exciting outdoor play areas.

We have fruit and milk to drink each morning and then we go out to play in the playground- we take turns to use the trim trail and the Bear garden.

All the children in the school meet in the hall for assembly. We have stories and visitors, and we talk about all sorts of things. We always sing some songs.

Some people have hot lunches and some bring their own lunch boxes. We eat our lunch in the hall and then go out to play.

In the afternoon we might do P.E., science, creative work or ICT.

Each week one group of children cook for us, so that everyone has something to   take home.

On Mondays we choose a new library book.

During the week, before home time, we will have checked our keywords, read our own reading book or done group reading.  We have rhymes, songs and stories.

What a busy day we have!

WATER, WATER

We start the second half of the Summer Term with a two week  block of Knowledge and Understanding using the story of "Noah's Ark " as a stimulus.  We will be finding out about the many uses and properties of water, linking to the seaside and water in the environment (including conservation).

We plan to host a 'Teddy Bear's Picnic' with the children planning and helping to organise the event.  Each child will need to bring their own ‘special guest’ (named please) to take part.  The children will write the invitations to advise you of the exact date.

Wednesday afternoon story session: from 23rd June onwards we invite parents to come to school on Wednesdays at 2.30 pm to share books with a small group of children (including your child).  Please enter through main entrance and sign in.

We would be grateful for contributions of:

·Washing up bottles (squeezy type bottles), pieces of pipe, hoses, tubes, joints and guttering if you have any of these items at home. For boat making please bring in any polystyrene or tin foil trays, moulded plastic inserts, etc.

Towards the end of the half term the children will have opportunities to visit the Year 1 area and work with Year 1 teachers to support a smooth transition to Year 1 in the Autumn.  Parents will also have the opportunity to visit the Year 1 area and meet the staff on 'open afternoon' - Monday 5 July.
